Biography
The highly successful Scottish historical painter John Pettie, R.A., trained in Edinburgh, but moved to London in 1862. Elected a Royal Academician in 1873, John Pettie shared a studio with the well-known William Quiller Orchardson. John Pettie displayed a vigorous and powerful painting style, though his dramatic and imaginative historical scenes are often somewhat theatrical. After 1870 he turned more towards portrait painting, often depicting his sitters in historical costume and he became increasingly interested in chiaroscuro. John Pettie's original etchings are few in number and for the most part are extremely rare.
